Gangil Byun
Associate Professor
Gangil Byun (SM’21) is an Associate Professor at UNIST and Director of the Core RF/Power Component Research Center for LONGS. The 2024 IEEE AP-S Young Professional of the Year and a 2023 IEEE AP-S Young Professional Ambassador, his work focuses on millimeter-wave antennas and adaptive beamforming for 5G/6G, satellites, and defense. Known for inventing Radar-in-Display (RiD), he specializes in bridging antenna engineering with signal processing to drive innovations in sparse arrays and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces.
Nuria Llombart
Full Professor
Nuria Llombart (IEEE Fellow) is Full Professor at TU Delft, where she has worked since 2012. She received her M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain, and previously held research positions at TNO, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Caltech, and Complutense University of Madrid.
Her research focuses on antennas and terahertz systems, and she has authored more than 200 journal and conference publications. She is the recipient of several major distinctions, including an ERC Starting Grant and the IEEE AP-S Lot Shafai Mid-Career Distinguished Achievement Award, and has served as Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on THz Science and Technology since 2023
Federico Gabriele
Assistant Professor
Dr. Gabriele Federico is an Assistant Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Electromagnetics Group of the Department of Electrical Engineering. He received his degrees in Telecommunication Engineering from the University of Bologna and later obtained both his Professional Doctorate in Engineering and Ph.D. from TU/e.
He has worked as an antenna engineer at The Antenna Company and as a guest researcher at XLIM, Limoges, France, following the EuMA Internship Award 2023. His research focuses on antenna arrays for mm-wave communications, antenna measurements, RF material characterization, and D-band MIMO antennas for automotive radar systems.
Eva Antonino-Daviu
Full Professor
Eva Antonino-Daviu is Full Professor at Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain, where she received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering. Her research interests include characteristic modes, small antennas, wideband and multiband antenna design, additive manufacturing, and antennas for MIMO, IoT, and mm-wave applications.
She has published more than 200 papers and two book chapters, and has led and contributed to several national and international projects. She is Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation and IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine, and received the 2019 IEEE AP-S Lot Shafai Mid-Career Distinguished Achievement Award.
Lasting Impact in a Fast Changing World
Speaker: Kathleen L. Melde, Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs, College of Engineering, Professor Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Arizona, Tucson Arizona
In this talk, I will briefly share my career journey from working in industry, completing my Ph.D., and working in academia in amazing antenna technologies. The focus will then shift to how we can make lasting impact in technical and human-centered aspects in rapidly changing times. This presentation draws from my experience in engineering leadership at a large research university in the United States.
Kathleen Melde is a professor of electrical and computer engineering, specializing in antenna design, wireless communications, and electromagnetics. She has made significant contributions to advancing multi-functional antenna technologies. Dr. Melde is a Fellow of the IEEE, recognized for her innovative research in antennas and packaging. She has authored numerous publications and holds several patents in her field. Dr. Melde is passionate about mentoring the next generation of engineers and and faculty. She has been the Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs in the College of Engineering at the University of Arizona for over six years.
Space Journeys
Speaker: Christer Fuglesang, Astronaut and Professor at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden
Christer Fuglesang is an astronaut and professor at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, while also working part time as Space Advisor for Saab. He has a PhD in experimental particle physics from Stockholm University and has worked for CERN and ESA. Fuglesang has made two space shuttle missions to ISS and performed there five EVAs. His research focus has been about particles in space and cosmic rays, and recently studying the possibility of putting sunshades in space to help control global temperature. He teaches a course in Human Spaceflight.
Fuglesang is member of the Royal Swedish Academies of Science, Engineering Science and War Sciences. He chairs the Boards for the Swedish National Museum of Science and Technology and Göran Gustafsson Foundation for Research in Natural Sciences and Medicine. He has written several books for children.
